Providing Service Differentiation in OBS Networks through Channel Reservation

چکیده
Optical Burst Switching (OBS) networks provide good features to support IP-overphotonics for the next generation Internet. In this paper, we propose a Virtual Channel Reservation (VCR) scheme for service differentiation in OBS networks. It provides scalable differentiated service to each priority class without implementing buffers or extra offset time. In particular, this scheme can achieve two goals. One is to utilize bandwidth efficiently; the other is to meet the low dropping probability requirement of high priority traffic. Simulation experiments are studied for both single-node and multi-node cases. In the multi-node case, a special header, named informing header (i-header) is designed to improve the overall dropping performance and reduce downstream bandwidth waste.

Service Differentiation in Optical Burst Switching Networks*
In this paper, we give an overview and classification of optical burst switching schemes and burst reservation concepts. We compare the performance of different burst reservation mechanisms for an OBS node that does not distinguish different classes. The one that performed best and allows service differentiation, called Just-Enough-Time, is then evaluated by simulations and an approximative ana...
متن کاملEfficient burst reservation protocol: a hybrid signaling protocol for efficient burst-level reservations and quality-of-service differentiation in optical burst switching networks
In this paper we present the efficient burst reservation protocol (EBRP) suitable for bufferless optical burst switching (OBS) networks. The EBRP protocol is a two-way reservation scheme that employs timed and in-advance reservation of resources. In the EBRP protocol timed reservations are relaxed, introducing a reservation time duration parameter that is negotiated during call setup phase. Thi...
متن کاملOn Burst Assembly in Optical Burst Switching Networks – A Performance Evaluation of Just-Enough-Time
On the way towards an architecture for a new QoS-supporting and scalable Internet, the IPover-photonics approach seems to be very promising. One possible solution in this domain is optical burst switching (OBS), a concept combining advantages of optical circuit and packet switching. After an introduction to OBS as well as the reservation mechanism Just-EnoughTime (JET) we present an approximati...
متن کاملService differentiation mechanisms for variable length packets
In this paper we focus on providing service differentiation for variable length packets. Apart from the well-known OBS approach using differentiated offsets to introduce multiple service classes, we consider a lookahead approach allowing for later arriving high priority packets to pre-empt earlier arrived low priority packets, and a slotted control approach. All approaches attain service differ...
متن کاملForward resource reservation for QoS provisioning in OBS systems
This paper addresses the issue of providing QoS services for Optical Burst Switching (OBS) systems. We propose a Linear Predictive Filter (LPF)-based Forward Resource Reservation method to reduce the burst delay at edge routers. An aggressive reservation method is proposed to increase the successful forward reservation probability and to improve the delay reduction performance. We also discuss ...
